The idea for this project emerged from doctoral research on entrepreneurial and innovative universities and the development of an original evaluation model. During postdoctoral research focusing on sustainable universities, it became increasingly clear that while many valuable sustainability practices exist, they often remain fragmented and disconnected.
Existing sustainability initiatives in higher education frequently focus on isolated dimensions, particularly environmental aspects. Most available indexes and assessment tools fail to capture the full complexity of universities as social, economic, and institutional systems. As a result, sustainability efforts often lack coherence and long-term strategic integration.
Although numerous good practices can be observed across universities, the absence of an integrated sustainability framework prevents these efforts from generating systemic impact. Sustainability is frequently treated as an add-on rather than as a core institutional principle embedded across governance, education, research, and societal engagement.
This project responds to these challenges by proposing a holistic, system-based evaluation model. By adopting a transversal approach, it aims to integrate sustainability across all dimensions of higher education institutions, enabling a more comprehensive and meaningful assessment of sustainable development in universities.
This motivation forms the foundation of the project’s thematic framework and evaluation model. The following themes translate this motivation into a structured conceptual and analytical approach.
This project is co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme (2021–2027), Key Action 2 – Cooperation Partnerships in Higher Education, administered by the Turkish National Agency (TR01), Grant Agreement No. 2025-1-TR01-KA220-HED-000362010.
